How was pink/white ink made?

I was doing some research and found out how different colored inks were made with different methods in the olden BC days, like how red was made from a certain mollusk and aquamarine was only found from stones or something on the top of a certain mountain. How exactly was pink made? Was it originally made by mixing red and white, or by some kind of pigment found in nature, and if it was made by mixing red and white, what was white made out of? I can't think of anything in nature that's white.
