I want to get blue highlights?

I've been wanting blue highlights for awhile now, but my friends keep telling me that it'll look tacky, but after watching Aquamarine, I really want them. I have dark brown hair & was planning on getting a sort of Bondi blue highlights... Do you think that would look good, or should I go for a lighter color?
